Build a School in India (BSI) has worked since 2013 to expand educational opportunities in India for children and older students. BSI always works with local nonprofit partners, so that underserved children from all communities can gain access to a quality education regardless of ability to pay. In every situation BSI joins with local donors in India to assist the success of the schools.
BSI is now working with three schools, and is evaluating additional potential school partners, as opportunities are identified. The relationship with Mata Balak Utkarsha Pratishthan in Solapur District, Maharashtra to support the development and operation of Utkarsha Vidyala school continues. The two new schools that are benefiting from BSI’s support are Jnana Prabodhini Harali in Osmanabad District, Maharashtra and Sondara Gurukul in Beed District, Maharashtra.
In addition to academic in-classroom instruction for pre-k through high school, programs for vocational skills and self-help, financial training in the community are now being supported by BSI. This training is also provided by the partner school organizations.
In early 2020 urgent requests from the schools related to the COVID-19 pandemic arose. BSI was able to quickly establish new agreements and reallocate funds to support essential distance learning programs, which are successfully functioning.
Close to 2,000 students, including young adults and village women, are currently benefiting from these programs. Additional projects have been identified, and are being evaluated for further review and possible approval in the coming year and beyond.
Most significantly, BSI has created a model for an endowment fund (also known as a corpus fund) for schools to provide a long-term financial foundation. Income from a corpus fund would be available in perpetuity to support gaps in operating expenses of a school that provides access to students regardless of the ability to pay full fees.

Below: "Thank you for helping us light the lamp of knowledge."
Your generosity makes all the difference in what BSI can accomplish.
Generous donors and volunteers pay all of the expenses for BSI’s overhead, fundraising, operating expenses and necessary travel. This means that 100% of every dollar and rupee you donate goes to schools in India. BSI’s leadership has often provided matching donations, which have increased the value of contributions. Check your mails, BSI’s website or contact BSI to learn of current matching commitments and opportunities.
Donations may be directed to a specific school, program category or type of student. Write in the memo section of your check or include a note. For online donations, include any preferences in the section titled “Directing your donation, how you know about BSI, comments"
