Hike for Hunger was started in 2017 by Izzy Thomas when she decided to hike 200 miles in ten days. By encouraging her friends and family to sponsor her, she raised $6,000 to feed hungry people in New Mexico.
"Almost one in five adults and one in four children don't know where their next meal will come from. People that I have become close to have either been or are part of this statistic, and that's what pushed me to do something for the Storehouse and the hungry people in New Mexico," says Izzy.
"There were times where all I could think was that each step I took meant that I had to take another and it got to the point where I didn't know if I could. But every time I felt like I was losing it, I reached into my bag and ate a snack. That would provide me with just enough energy to get through the next four miles. I've always had food available to me and I didn't realize how hard it is to function without it. On one of the hikes, I ran out of food and water at mile twenty and I still had four more miles to get back to my car. I would count each step until I reached 100 and then would fall back and sit until nothing became more uncomfortable than moving forward. And that must be, on a small scale, what it feels like to be one of the people going to the Storehouse trying to rebuild their lives."
This year, Izzy invites you to join her for part of a hike, donate money, or volunteer at the food pantry. She plans to hike 100 miles from July 1-3. Let's rally behind her and kick start her campaign! Even a couple of dollars makes a difference. When donated to the Storehouse, $1 provides five meals to people in need.

The Storehouse became a nonprofit organization in 1976 with one specific mission: to help New Mexicans solve their food insecurities regardless of race, faith, age, gender or disability. Hunger has increased rapidly over the years, and as of now, we help almost 50,000 clients.
We pride ourselves on providing fresh produce and quality protein to our clients. All of this food, which totaled 1.4 million meals last year, is provided by the Storehouse for free. This healthy food helps our littlest ones grow and learn, and helps adults focus at their jobs. As a bonus, eating meals together as a family helps kids be more emotionally stable, more likely to enjoy eating vegetables, and more likely to succeed at school. Unfortunately, New Mexico is ranked #2 in childhood hunger and 1 out of every 4 children in New Mexico is hungry. Please, won't you help us end childhood hunger in New Mexico?
