Since 2008, Virginia Western's nationally recognized Community College Access Program (CCAP) has brought our communities together to make college possible. And in 2023-2024, thanks to community partners, donors and friends, we are celebrating some amazing milestones:

15 years of program impact

More than 4,000 energetic, dedicated and talented high school graduate participants

$10 million in tuition assistance, freeing them from student debt and changing lives - and our region - one student at a time.

And now - especially now - for all our students, it's time to do more. It's time for CCAP to grow to meet the real-world needs of our workforce and our future. To make sure our high school graduates have a clear path ahead, as the pandemic has changed so many lives.

Through Virginia Western's CCAP campaign, we have paved the way forward by:

Allowing students to complete workforce training programs accompanied by national industry-recognized certifications;
Making eligible part-time enrollment – because our students work;
Extending the program to three years for completion, aligning CCAP with national, statewide and local trends.

CCAP is a partnership between our localities, business, industry, foundations, families, and friends. CCAP is all of us, together. Our proven success is your success. Together, we are building a better future.

CCAP: College to a higher power.

Virginia Western: A first choice for educational excellence

Every fall, nearly one-fourth of all high school graduates in the Roanoke region enroll at Virginia Western – making it a first choice higher education destination. Why? When asked, students cite affordability, proximity to home and academic opportunities.
With the promise of CCAP at the finish line, more students are motivated and graduating high school.
The program boasts success rates of over 90%.

CCAP is building a stronger, skilled workforce in the Roanoke region

Virginia Western is a trusted leader in regional economic development
- 85% of Virginia Western’s graduates stay here to live and work;
- 74% of career/technical graduates are employed within a year.
65% of jobs require post-secondary education.
- CCAP students receive assistance not only for pursuing academic degrees but also for achieving industry-recognized credentials and certificates that are in high demand by local employers.
CCAP students aim to achieve
- More than 75% enroll with the intention of transferring to a four-year institution. Virginia Tech is the College’s largest recipient of transfer students, followed by Radford University.
- 40% of current enrollees are pursuing STEM-related degrees;
- another 9% are in the Health Professions, preparing to join our region’s fastest growing employment sector.

CCAP supports a “Pay it back” culture of community service

All CCAP participants are required to volunteer in their community each semester, as a way of saying “Thanks” to the many public and private donors who have invested in their education.
- To date, CCAP students have contributed more than 28,000 hours of volunteer service to Roanoke Valley organizations.
