The Cedar Rapids community was devastated by the August 10th derecho storm, leaving most of the City with severe damage, a widespread power outage, and limited access to essential resources, thus causing a serious humanitarian crisis. We’re asking for your generosity to the Catherine McAuley Center so we can continue supporting the neighbors we know best through this crisis-- refugees and immigrants, adult learners, and women healing from trauma.
After moving into our new building less than one month ago, the Catherine McAuley Center sustained significant roof and water damage in the storm and will require intensive renovations. Inspired by the resilience and courage of our clients, CMC is working around the clock to rebuild the Center while responding to the needs of the community. In the aftermath of the storm, we responded quickly to develop an immediate plan of action.
The Catherine McAuley Center is a place of welcome, and we are certainly staying true to our mission as we transition our former location into a temporary shelter for those who have been displaced by the storm, many who are refugee and immigrant families. Thanks to the coordination of local agencies and CMC staff, families will have a place to call home for the foreseeable future. The new site has regained power and is supervised by CMC staff members. Additionally, we have interpreters who speak Kirundi, Kinyarwanda, Swahili, French, Spanish, and Lingala.
Due to the severity and critical need to provide housing for displaced individuals, we quickly moved forward with this effort. With it comes a sense of hope and gratitude that CMC is able to provide shelter during a devastating crisis, and also a growing need for financial support and assistance. This is where we need your help. In order to properly operate the shelter, purchase supplies, and provide staffing to operate this new service, we will rely on community involvement and financial contributions to make it happen.
With your support, we can rebuild and continue to create a place of welcome during a time where our community is hurting. By choosing to give to the Catherine McAuley Center, you are helping us cover the costs to provide a place to call home for at least 60 Iowans. If there’s anything we’ve learned from our clients, we will remain resilient and overcome this crisis! Thank you for thinking of the Catherine McAuley Center during this challenging time.
