For 30 years, the Catherine McAuley Center has been a place of welcome where people have the safety to learn and grow. As our community has evolved, we’ve adapted to meet its emerging needs, providing services to over 700 individuals - immigrants, refugees and women experiencing crisis - in the last year.
Our former building, a repurposed convent, was bursting at the seams, with tiny offices forged out of closets and tutoring sessions squeezed into the kitchen and lobby. The lack of space translated into waiting lists and unmet needs. To fulfill our commitment to our community, we’re inviting you to be part of creating a new place of welcome that is allowing us to expand services and achieve accessibility.
Jacques' journey to the United States wasn't an easy one.
At age 14, Jacques and his 16 year-old brother fled their home in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and then spent 10 years living in a refugee camp. In 2017, Jacques was reunited with his aunt in Cedar Rapids with the help of the Catherine McAuley Center. While Jacques found many types of support at the Center, the sense of welcome he felt from the moment he stepped off the plane was what gave him confidence in adjusting to life in Eastern Iowa.
You can help us expand our Place of Welcome to provide educational and supportive services to even more newcomers like Jacques, along with adult learners and women experiencing crisis.
