The Sellen Community Foundation launched the Pre-apprenticeship Support Fund to help generate economic opportunity by reducing barriers to entry in construction trades and diversifying the industry. These efforts support local construction trades training and readiness programs with wraparound support services to recruit students, retain them and diversify construction industry talent in the greater Puget Sound region – especially for people of color and women.
On average, it costs $100,000 to fund one pre-apprenticeship cohort of 25 students, which covers training, gear, tools and testing requirements. These and future grants are funded by Sellen Community Foundation, Sellen Construction and its subcontractor partners, and other supporters of this important work.
At this time, all funds are being granted to local nonprofit ANEW that has the longest-running and most successful pre-apprenticeship program in the region. Watch this video to see how last year’s fundraising campaign helped sponsor Cohort 114, a group of 20 women pursuing careers in the construction trades.
