Walk off your Thanksgiving meal with SLT's Stewardship Director Regina Wandler on a fall walk around the Utopia Conservation Area. Learn more about the history, challenges and successes of restoration at this site along the Skagit River near Sedro Woolley.

We'll tromp through planted fields, over sloughs, and to the bank of the beautiful Skagit River, keeping our eyes open for notable plants and signs of wildlife along the way. Rubber boots and rain gear will likely be necessary. Attendees must be able to navigate muddy trails. Hot cocoa and sweet treats provided.

Join Jack Hartt, author of several local interest books and retired manager of Deception Pass State Park, and Skagit Land Trust Executive Director Molly Doran for an inspiring hike along Pass Lake and the Tursi Trail to a scenic viewpoint.

Samish Island Conservation Tour With Cocktail Hour

Enjoy a walk through Guemes Dog Woods and discussion about Guemes Island protection efforts with Stewardship Coordinator Hannah Williams and Dog Woods owners Paul Beaudet & David Wertheimer. Lunch will follow this guided walk, provided by Guemes Island General Store.

Dogs welcome! Participants will need to navigate their own way over and back via the Guemes Ferry. Morning ferries depart Anacortes at 9:15 and 9:45 am. Afternoon ferries depart at 1:00, 1:30, 2:00 and 2:45pm.

The Dog Woods forest had been heavily logged in the 1920s to provide wood for local shipyards, and was almost entirely clear cut again in the 1960s. A new forest of alder, birch, fir, hemlock, and maple has been maturing over the past few decades. Some trees were spared in each wave of cutting. A few stands of western red cedar are at least 200 years old. About 40 acres were cut a decade ago and never replanted, but the open meadows and scrublands that emerged are teeming with deer, coyote, owls, raptors, woodpeckers, and songbirds.
