A word from Rogue Oysters

In March 2020, our orders for oysters stopped overnight. After a few weeks, we realized things weren’t going back to normal as soon as we’d hoped and quickly set up an online store and began selling directly to oyster lovers who were willing to try them at home. Thanks to great partners in FOR and CBF, we were reaching new oyster lovers and they are a big part of the reason our little farm survived 2020. Unfortunately, we only sold 20% of the oysters we started raising in 2019.

These oysters became market size in 2020; however, given the pandemic’s negative impact on demand, the majority of these oysters didn’t go to market and stayed on the farm, continuing to grow, and are now too large to go to restaurants. We will need the cages holding those oysters very soon for our 2020 crops, which will begin growing again and needing more space any day now. This means the farm is full of so many large oysters that there is no chance of selling them all before we need the space they are taking up. Thankfully, these are mature oysters that can do some good for the River.

To that end, we are partnering with Friends of the Rappahannock to put our excess oysters to work cleaning the Rappahannock and in turn, the Chesapeake Bay. For every dollar you donate to FOR, we will put at least two oysters into one of their reef projects. For every 10 oysters that get sponsored, we’ll donate an oyster.

We wish we could do more, but frankly, we need the help of oyster lovers to make it through 2021 so we continue feeding families and cleaning the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay.
