Malawi: Tropical Cyclone Freddy

Very Intense Tropical Cyclone Freddy was an exceptionally long-lived, powerful, and deadly storm that tracked across the Indian Ocean for more than five weeks in February and March 2023. As of today, 15th March, 2023, 40,631 households in Malawi have been displaced, while over 400 people have died, 201 are missing, and 774 have sustained various injuries.

Search and rescue efforts are continuing in Nsanje, Chikwawa, Mulanje, Phalombe, and Blantyre districts of Malawi, where most of the areas are still flooded. Blantyre, Chiradzulu, and Phalombe districts experienced mudslides that have killed several people. Public infrastructure such as schools, health facilities, and district and main roads have been damaged in all affected districts. Government and partners are providing relief assistance to the affected districts.
