Please consider a gift of support for the Puente Program at Napa Valley College. Your generosity will continue the support of our students!
The PUENTE Project was founded by Felix Galaviz, a Chabot College counselor, and Pat McGrath, an English instructor in 1981. The two saw the need for support services, among whom they saw a common lack of direction and engagement, poor academic skills—especially in writing– and elevated drop out rate. Galaviz and McGrath believed there were three components that were critical to motivating and supporting Chicanx/Latinx students in achieving academic success: Writing, Counseling and Mentoring.
Our mission is to increase the number of first generation students transferring to four-year colleges and universities. Napa Valley College initiated its PUENTE Program in 2004!
PUENTE has won accolades for its approach to helping more than 400,000 underserved students thrive academically by holding high expectations, valuing cultural and social capital, and ensuring that students and their families have crucial college-going information and guidance.
