Macon Arts Alliance was founded in 1984 when a Chamber of Commerce Task Force recognized that a coordinated arts community would serve as a catalyst for cultural vibrancy in the area. In 1988, Macon Arts Alliance was designated the official arts agency for the City of Macon and Bibb County. In 2014, the newly consolidated Macon-Bibb County government reaffirmed the designation at its first official meeting. Macon Arts Alliance supports artists and arts organizations by providing a marketplace for local artists to exhibit and sell their work, advocating for the use of art to improve the aesthetic quality of public buildings, streetscapes and open spaces, fostering educational opportunities for all ages, encouraging communication and collaboration among local artists and arts organizations, and leading advocacy efforts through local, state and national platforms. Macon Arts Alliance is the managing entity for the Macon-Bibb Public Art Commission. In addition, Macon Arts Alliance is working with the Macon-Bibb Urban Development Authority, neighborhood residents and community stakeholders to develop an artist village in the historic East Macon neighborhood of Fort Hawkins in order to address blight and foster economic opportunity.
