Did you know that families with young children account for about one third of the homeless population? At Housing Forward we are grateful for your support on this global day of giving as we work on behalf of all who experience housing instability. But the alarming growth in this family demographic makes it especially important to us to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children. Homeless families often move frequently due to limited lengths of stay at shelters, a search for affordable housing or stable employment, or to escape an abusive situation. Homeless children often need to change schools because shelters or temporary living arrangements are not located within their school district. These changes disrupt their learning and according to the Institute for Children and Poverty, children who are homeless are nine times more likely to repeat a grade, four times more likely to drop out of school, and three times more likely to be placed in special education programs than students who are housed.
You can make a difference by making a donation to assist families with financial interventions to divert them from becoming homeless in the first place, or to make their homelessness rare, one-time and brief. Other ways you can impact those that are homeless is by giving in one of the meaningful ways below. Thank you for your support.
