Meet ECAD Client: Sarah Otero

Hello! My name is Sarah Otero, and I am here to ask for your help to not only better my life, but also future lives.

I will tell you more about me in just a second, but first I want to tell you more about this amazing non-profit organization called “ECAD”, Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities. I was recently accepted into their program, and am very excited to hopefully receive my very own service dog. This program trains dogs from birth, specific to the needs of the client, so that the canine truly services the needs of that specific person. I am very excited in the hopes that this will become a reality for me.

As I told you before my name is Sarah Otero, and I am a 2.5 years old toddler, because I am 2.5 years old, I wouldn’t actually be receiving my service dog until I am about 4.5 years old. This is because it takes the program approximately 2 years to train a canine specific to my needs. I am a toddler who lives with Down Syndrome. I was a birth diagnosis, and so my diagnosis in itself came as a shock to all. I was born with congenital cataracts in both eyes, and VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect). I have since had my intraocular lens replaced, after a total of 4 surgeries. I am very grateful that my eyesight is much better.

As for my VSD, although it is still present, it is just being monitored at the moment. A service dog would not only be potentially a friend/playmate for me, but also a sense of independence, as it would help me with my daily activities. A service dog for me would also be a sense of comfort as I am sensitive to certain noises.

Donating to this amazing program would not only benefit me but also many other children/adults with disabilities. ECAD also services veterans, and provides therapy dogs to many centers and hospitals. Your donation would help keep this wonderful program going. Please consider donating today.

Thank you for your generous gifts to ECAD in honor of Sarah Otero.
