When Stephanie and her family visited ECAD and met several of the Service Dogs-in-Training, they
knew immediately that a service dog will improve her quality of life by restoring her independence .
Meet ECAD Client Stephanie Pokras
There are some things we take for granted. My name is Stephanie Pokras, and I’m a Junior History major with pre-law designation at The College of Wooster in Ohio. It sounds cheesy but I love school, really and truly! To me, there’s nothing more exciting than digging into topics such as how contemporary philosophy influenced the art of Botticelli or if an affirmative action program favoring men is constitutional under the Fourteenth amendment. In fact, it’s my goal to become a disability rights lawyer to help those in similar situations to me.
While I love college, college is even harder for me than it is for most. I live with several chronic illnesses including Ehlers Danlos Syndrome III, Fibromyalgia, and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. These conditions cause, among other symptoms, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, frequent joint dislocations, vertigo, and fainting spells. While most students roll out of bed and go to class in the morning, and go to clubs and parties in the evening, I can’t because I can never be alone. If I were ever to be alone during one of my fainting spells things could become very dangerous for me.
As I am right now, I am incredibly grateful to have an amazing support network of friends who have organized shifts to escort me to classes and meals. However, my friends can’t and won’t always be there. I know I am just barely emerging into adulthood, but having a service dog would allow me the freedom and independence to do things like walk to class, have meals without scheduling them in advance, and to do my own laundry. That’s why I’m so incredibly grateful to have been selected to receive an ECAD Service Dog. In this vein I’m campaigning to raise $24,000 for ECAD. Please consider making a donation in my name in order to help support those who no longer have the luxury to take their independence for granted.
Thank you for your generous gifts to ECAD in honor of Stephanie Pokras.
