When Rowan’s parents, Kathleen and Evan Miller, visited ECAD’s Canine Education and Wellness Center and met
Service Dog-in-Training Mesa, they knew immediately that a service dog would help their son.

And, when they met one of the new puppies, everyone was all smiles.

Meet ECAD Client Rowan Miller

Rowan has always been an uncommonly sweet little boy. He takes pleasure in entertaining everyone around him, and nothing makes him happier than seeing others smiling and laughing. That being said, Rowan has a long and difficult road ahead of him due to a very rare congenital condition that causes hypotonia, or very low muscle tone.

At eighteen months old, Rowan has not hit most of the physical milestones that would be expected of someone his age; he also tires very quickly because of the effort it takes for him to do anything. Despite his disability, he is a hard worker and he puts a great amount of effort into his physical therapy sessions. Although he cannot yet sit up unassisted, based on the progress Rowan has made thus far, his parents and doctors are hopeful that he will be crawling and walking with time. He is doing well with his fine motor skills, and is working on reaching for things, communicating with gestures, and helping with his feeding.

An ECAD Service Dog will be beneficial for Rowan in a number of ways. First and foremost, Rowan will be needing help with balance. Every new skill for him takes a very long time, and he needs a lot of assistance because of his hypotonia. With his service dog, there will be much less risk of Rowan becoming injured.

Rowan is very motivated by and loves interacting with animals. He becomes ecstatic when he sees dogs, cats, or other animals. Unfortunately, untrained animals are not patient with him, and they move too quickly or shy away. Having a specially-trained ECAD Service Dog to support him and motivate him will help Rowan overcome his difficulties.
