When Morgan visited ECAD’s Canine Education and Wellness Center and met Service Dog-in-Training Freedom,
she knew immediately that a service dog will help her become more independent.
Meet ECAD Client Morgan Waite
My name is Morgan Lee Waite. On August 21, 2017, I did yoga in the morning and went with a friend to a wine tasting in Sonoma, California, something I love to do. Later that day, I was involved in a diving accident and dislocated my neck at C4/C5 and became a quadriplegic.
Currently, I am wheelchair dependent and require twenty-four-hour-a-day care. I have the worst prognosis for a spinal cord injury, but I am determined to recover far beyond what the statistics say.
I graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 2010, and earned the position of Executive Chef at the Barrelhead Brewhouse in San Francisco in 2016. My life was extremely independent and active working sixty to seventy hours a week, working-out daily, biking to work, and I had recently become a Beach Body coach, helping others meet their nutrition and fitness goals.
Following my spinal cord injury, I was left with no alternative but to give up my independence and dreams and move back to upstate New York for the help and support of my family.
I have always loved animals. I will be so grateful for any amount of independence I can regain. With the help of my service dog I will be able to spend more time alone without the 24/7 need for family. Having a service dog to share love, life and laughter will mean the world to me.
