“In the United States, approximately 1 in 68 babies are born with Autism. I’m one of those
moms that has a child with Autism. Meet Michael, my beautiful son.” Catherine
Please help Michael live a fuller and safer life with a Service Dog for Autism!
Michael DeOliveira is a seven-year old boy who has Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism is a serious developmental disorder that impacts a person’s nervous system. Michael’s autism affects the way he perceives the world, causing him daily anxiety. However, he loves large dogs and is calmed by their presence. That is why Michael’s doctor recommended a service dog, indicating that a specially-educated dog would help to improve Michael’s social interactions and emotional and cognitive development. A service dog would also help him gain more independence and the ability to perform activities of daily living. Importantly, having a service dog will help keep Michael safe. Michael has a tendency to wander off and/or bolt away from his mother and other caregivers. The dog will be specially educated to help prevent this from occurring.
Michael’s mom was introduced to ECAD - Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities - and applied for a service dog for Michael. “Going to the interview at ECAD was one of the best days we had in a very long time! We had been going through some very challenging times with Michael, but being at ECAD is when I finally saw the light,” his mother, Catherine, explains. “Being around the service dogs had a very positive effect on Michael. No wonder they call the autism program Canine Magic!”
Michael and his family (Michael lives with his mom, maternal grandparents and aunt) are absolutely thrilled to be on their fundraising journey to help raise money to obtain an ECAD service dog for Michael. “It takes a lot of hard work, patience and time to train a service dog, so we ask for everyone’s support in helping us in this commitment!
