Meet ECAD Client Laura Scanlon
Hi, I’m Laura Scanlon. I’m a junior at Wellesley College studying mathematics and computer science. In addition to studying, I love to do a lot of different things including wushu, gymnastics, playing games with my four sisters, woodworking, bike-riding, and baking.
I’ve been studying very hard at Wellesley to work towards my degree, but it’s been difficult. In my first year, I started having frequent cataplexy episodes that began to greatly affect my life. The first time, I was in my Linear Algebra class and suddenly collapsed. It was very scary as I was unable to move and neither I nor anyone knew what was going on.
Since then, it’s been a long road of doctor’s appointments and research to figure out what has been going on. Now that we know I have narcolepsy with cataplexy, and that I will likely continue to have unexpected and sudden episodes for the rest of my life, I’m looking for ways to mitigate any danger I’m in when they occur.
An ECAD service dog would be able to alert me when an episode is about to happen and lay by me when they happen, giving me a level of protection and therefore, independence. In addition, my service dog would be able to help me with symptoms related to narcolepsy - such as waking me up in the morning and keeping me alert throughout the day.
I’m hoping that becoming part of a service dog team though ECAD, will give me back the independence that narcolepsy and cataplexy took. This is why I am excited to be fundraising to support ECAD, Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities. I’m very grateful for this opportunity and to everyone who is able to support this endeavor. Thank you!!
