When Kay visited ECAD’s Canine Education and Wellness Center, and met several of the Service Dogs-in-Training,
she knew immediately that a service dog will improve her quality of life by restoring her independence .
Meet ECAD Client Kay Spencer
I grew up in the hills of East Tennessee, in a well-educated, articulate, highly creative community. Venturing forth from my hometown at age 17, I attended a small college near Knoxville, and then began my career as a music teacher and keyboard accompanist. I ended up moving to North Carolina, where my husband and I raised our two wonderful sons, taught music, and worked as Ministers of Music.Thank you for your generous gifts to ECAD in honor of Kay Spencer.
Now, as I enter senior adulthood, I have an unwelcome companion: Parkinson’s disease. Diagnosed in August 2008, my life has been radically altered by the disease that seems determined to steal all of who I was and what I could do! I can no longer teach or make music; or even move independently!
However, with a specially educated ECAD Service Dog by my side, I will regain the freedom and independence to do more of the things I love. Importantly, my dog will greatly increase my confidence with walking, assist me with rising from a seated position, and in the retrieval of objects I may inadvertently drop.
Sewing, an old favorite hobby, gratefully has not been robbed by my disability. Currently, I am making fully lined, multi-jointed teddy bears from old fur coats and bathrobes to help raise funds for ECAD. Every donor who gives a tax-deductible gift of $750 or more to ECAD in my honor will receive one of my bears as a thank you from me personally. Or, if you choose, I will make a custom memory bear from material you provide.
Your generous support will help improve the independence, mobility, and mental health for those of us with disabilities through the very special gift of an ECAD Service Dog.
Donations are 100% tax-deductible as allowable by law. If your employer has a Matching Gift program, please complete the form and mail it to ECAD, P.O. Box 831, Torrington, CT 06790.
