"My heart was shattered into a million pieces when Skittles, my service dog, unexpectedly passed away the day after
Christmas 2016. ‘My boy’ was close to my side when I lost a treasured friend that day.” Joanne
Joanne Kocourek (proud mom to Joshua, Annalies and Kristen, and grandma to Gianna and Angel Lilyanna!) has been surrounded by ECAD service dogs since 2002, when her daughter Kristen was placed with a Medical Alert service dog named Brooklyn. Two years later, in 2004, Joanne’s eldest daughter, Annalies, was placed with Stitch, also a Medical Alert service dog.
ECAD service dog Skittles came into Joanne’s (and her family’s) life in 2006. Joanne suffers from Lupus and an extremely rare, progressive connective tissue disease that has led to the loss of her ability to stand and walk, among other medical issues. Skittles was an integral part of Joanne’s daily care. “Her boy” allowed Joanne a great degree of independence and helped with her activities of daily living. When Skittles died suddenly at Christmas time, Joanne and the entire family were devastated; especially since Brooklyn, Joanne’s daughter Kristen’s service dog, had also recently passed away.
Joanne, her family and her doctors know that the time is right for a successor service dog. That is why Joanne is actively fundraising to help ECAD educate and place another loving, devoted, strong and faithful canine friend with her.
Thank you for your generous support to help ECAD educate a service dog for Joanne.
