Meet ECAD Client Isabella Gray
Isabella Gray was born on October 22, 2011 by emergency C-section at St. Mary’s hospital in Waterbury, CT. When Bella was born, it was determined there was a lack of oxygen supply to her brain, causing damage. In the first few hours of her life, she suffered multiple seizures and was transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital, where she stayed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for over a month. At Bella’s one year checkup, she was officially diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. This was not a shock, but it was still difficult for Bella’s parents to hear.
Bella, now almost seven years old, has made remarkable progress. She continues to work with speech, occupational, and physical therapists, in addition to the services she receives at school. All of the therapists have worked together and are truly dedicated to helping Bella gain some independence. She takes the bus to and from school and uses a gait trainer to walk in and out of school; she also uses it most of the time to get from place to place in school. Bella is in a special education classroom most of her day, but is also assigned a regular class. She is able to spend some time with her peers, but her participation is limited due to her lack of speech and motor skills. However, she loves school and really has made her parents very proud of her and how strong she is.
Bella also loves to be at home together with her family. Bella’s big sister is two years older than she is and lovingly helps with Bella’s special needs. Bella is not only surrounded by a great family but she is lucky to live in a neighborhood that has turned into an extended family.
Bella’s parents know there are going to be many more challenges for her as she grows older, however, with the assistance of an ECAD Service Dog, Bella’s physical and emotional difficulties will be made easier and her quality of life will be increased.
