ECAD Client Beth Holloway Looks Forward to Her Successor Dog
If anyone asked me, I would not call my life remarkable at all. I simply want to live a normal, ordinary life. My disabilities, however, often make that quite challenging. I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at a young age, but my parents raised me to believe I was no different from anyone else.
That is why, despite physical and emotional difficulties, I was able to excel in school, eventually earning an Associate’s Degree and, finally, my Bachelor’s Degree in History. It took many long years, but I did it! I did not do it alone – my family, therapist, psychiatrists and friends, are my amazing support system.
There are times when even the strongest support system is not enough: a scheduled check-in with family is missed, emails and calls to friends go unanswered, it is after hours and staff, therapists and doctors are unavailable. It is at those times when one has to rely on inner strength, knowledge of abilities and limitations. I am realistic about what I can do…and what I cannot.
In 2011, one of my counselors suggested the possibility of me getting a service dog to help me gain greater independence and emotional support. As luck would have it, I was introduced to ECAD, and after a long application process, I was paired with my wonderful Service Dog, Somer. We have been an inseparable team for almost ten years. She has made me a better person. Or, more accurately, the person I always was, but could not be without her assistance.
Somer’s time with me will soon come to an end due to health issues and her age. Somer's part in my story may be ending, but my own journey is just beginning. I will use the lessons she has taught me as I prepare for and begin to work with my next dog. And, she will live in my heart forever. Thank you, Somer. I will make you proud.
