Edna Bronzino enjoys hiking and volunteering to educate beach-goers about the endangered monk seals on Kauai Beach
while staying with her family for part of each year in Hawaii. But while living alone on Long Island, NY for the rest of the year,
Edna realizes how important a service dog would be to help maintain her independence.
Sixteen years ago, I was hit by a truck in a horrible car accident; and that’s how I found out I had Multiple Sclerosis. In the car, I fell backwards and forwards and back again, resulting in severe whiplash to my neck. At the hospital, when they x-rayed me, a lesion on my spinal cord revealed MS — the disease I didn’t know I had.
Over the years, the MS has progressively impaired my gait and my balance. And, after having had two bad falls recently, I knew it was time to get some help to try to maintain my lifestyle as much as possible, especially when I am alone. But even while I’m staying with my family for extended visits with them in Hawaii, my daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren also realize the positive impact a service dog will have on my life.
My grandchildren, Olivia (ten years old) and Drew (eight years old), explain it best:
Grandma always loses her balance. One day at the beach we were walking and Grandma lost her balance and fell. Thankfully, a tree was there for her to grab on to and she only scraped her toes on the lava rock. If she had a service dog, the dog could help her walk. When Grandma is playing on the floor with us, she can’t get up, so Dad always has to help her up. A service dog would help Grandma instead of Dad.
This is why I am excited about fundrasing to support ECAD, Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities; and to help the organization defray the $25,000 expense of placing me with a service dog. Your donations are greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your generous support to help ECAD educate a service dog for Edna.
