As an early college student at HAIS, I juggle a workload of rigorous high school classes and challenging college courses everyday. Outside of my schoolwork I am on my school’s cheer team and practice three days per week with a weekly performance on Fridays. Given the intensity of my coursework I make a point to get help when I need it. I attend weekly tutoring sessions to ensure that I am maintaining my A average. I am also a member of a program called Breakthrough Houston. Breakthrough Houston is an organization that selects top students in their class and works with them from middle school into high school providing curriculum in the core subjects and teaching college and career readiness tools. As a student in that program I am required to attend monthly sessions and have the opportunity to mentor those in younger grades. I have been a part of this organization since my sixth grade year and it has vastly prepared me for my current high school career. I have found amazing volunteer opportunities around my city and volunteer much of my time to these organizations. I have spent time with animals at Barc the pet shelter, helping in the kitchen at the Houston Food Bank, assisting special needs adults find and succeed at work through a local non-profit. I am grateful that these organizations exist and that I can spend my free time doing positive and productive tasks.
One way I can reach my goal of becoming a global citizen is by attending this wonderful trip to Spain with CIEE. During this program I will attend spanish classes during the day and interact with locals to better understand the language and culture. As a minority in my country I feel it's very important to stay culturally sensitive and this will be a step forward to reaching my goal. Living in such a diverse city it’s beneficial to be able to communicate with the people I may encounter. This will give me the chance to expand my knowledge on another way of life, that many will have never experienced before, and also improve my Spanish speaking abilities. Going to Spain for four weeks will teach me a whole different way of living than the one I know.
I would be grateful if you decide to donate towards my future. Although I have recieved a scholarship, I need to contribute more than $1,000 for my flight. Any contributions will be helpful.
