In collaboration with the Empowered Youth of Columbus (EYC), this program is designed to introduce young people to music through group violin instruction, instilling in them the discipline, powers of concentration, and team work necessary to be successful, not only in music but in life. It is teaching life skills through music. Our goal is not to create professional musicians, but rather to enrich students’ lives through the creative pursuit of musical skills. Through this program, the CSO provides and maintains the musical instruments needed for each student and provides instructional staffing from members of its orchestra. EYC will provide programmatic structure to support violin lessons. The CSO currently has two teaching artists in violin at Downtown Elementary Magnet Academy and Dawson Elementary with plans to expand this program into other EYC sites throughout the Muscogee area as well as other area schools. Teaching artists will prepare the students for at least one live performance for the community each semester.
