Philadelphia has the highest rate of deep poverty in the top ten of the nation's most populated cities
Philadelphia has the highest poverty rate- 28.4% of the city are living in poverty.
About 200,000 people in Philadelphia live beneath the deep poverty rate (12.9%).
The people that live around Philadelphia only have a 3.6% rate of deep poverty, but that still results in 160,000 people living with only $12,000 a year for a family of four.
Nationwide about 20 million people live in deep poverty
Philadelphians in deep poverty live without running water or electricity or heat for long periods of time, according to Mariana Chilton, a nationally recognized expert on poverty at Drexel University’s School of Public Health.
“It forces them to live in toxic stress,” Chilton said. “There’s no break, no ability to bounce back. They’re dealing with social dysfunction, violence in the family, potential drug addiction, poor education.”
While there are more than 46 million poor Americans, just 4.4 million are on welfare – 3.3 million of them children, federal figures show

Philadelphia is the second poorest city in the United States, but, it has the most residents living in deep poverty. Both people living in the suburbs around the city and people in the city itself often struggle to get all of their needed necessities besides groceries. Help give clothes, books, toys, and games to children living in poverty by donating money to this fundraiser. Give them a little ray of sunshine while they endure the trials that they are going through.
Please help our 2017-18 Teen Leadership Corps members reach their goal!
These student leaders are supporting the mission of Cradles to Crayons to provide everyday essentials to local children in need throughout the Greater Philadelphia region. Each TLC member will be leading volunteer shifts in our Giving Factory warehouse and has pledged to raise at least $500 during their term.
Your donation on this page will go toward the entire TLC campaign, or you can choose a Teen Leader from the "Our Fundraisers" box on the lower right to support an individual student's efforts.
We are proud of their initiative and grateful for their efforts.
Thank YOU for supporting them!
