My dad and I shared many things: bad knees; an addiction to mystery novels; a deep and abiding love of donuts.
More importantly, though, we both have a drive to help those among us who have the least - especially children. That's why I've chosen to give to Cradles to Crayons in memory of my dad. C2C is a top-notch, well-established nonprofit that provides low-income and homeless children in Boston with the essentials they need. I particularly appreciate that they span the ages 0 to 12 -- children in the same family can pass down their clothing, books, and other items to younger sibilings or cousins, expanding the long-term reach of the organization. I also am drawn to their philosophy - while getting these items to children is the most important part, C2C also has a focus on maintaining the dignity of their recipients. Cash gifts to the organization allow them to purchase brand-new clothing, for example, and just imagine how nice it is for a child who normally wears hand-me-downs to get his very own, brand-new winter coat. The organization works with local school systems to match school supply lists to the children recieving "Back to School Packs", so that the kids get the same crayons/scissors/kleenex/etc that their peers do -- so they aren't singled out as poor or as receiving charity.
If you feel so inclined, I encourage you to make a gift to Cradles to Crayons in memory of my father, Ken Emert, or in honor of my 40th (!!!!) birthday. Every dollar makes a direct difference in the life of a child.
Thank you for caring about me, my dad, and the children in our community.
In Boston, nearly 300,000 children under 12 live in abject poverty. For a family of four, the poverty line is only $25,000 - so putting food on the table and paying rent don't leave much money for other essentials like diapers, warm winter clothes, school supplies, and books. Cradles to Crayons provides kids in need with these items so they can succeed.
Cradles to Crayons has a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator. I reviewed their audited financials and 990, and they are top-notch.
