At Avodah, we believe in the power of Jewish leaders to advance justice in the United States. Every year, we recruit young adults ages 21-26 from across the country to spend a year in our Jewish Service Corps working at leading nonprofits in Chicago, New Orleans, New York, and Washington, DC. Our Corps Members live and learn together in a supportive, pluralistic community at the crossroads of social activism and Jewish life. Over the course of their year of service, they provide critical services and opportunities to tens of thousands of people coping with the challenges of poverty. Avodah Corps Members also gain the knowledge, experience and networks necessary to sustain their work over the course of their lives.
In 2006, the first Avodah Chicago Service Corps bayit (house) opened with nine Corps Members in the Albany Park neighborhood. Since then, more than 150 Corps Members have worked with close to 50 Chicago nonprofits, serving over 107,000 individuals who are working to make ends meet and adding nearly $3 million in staffing capacity. The Windy City might get cold and dark for part of the year, but Avodah Corps Members keep the light on for social change at the heart of a committed and supportive Jewish community.
