For my 38th birthday, I have decided to take on a big challenge: a 26.2 mile walk from Austin to Taylor on my actual birthday; and, I'm going to be raising a whopping $5k for Girls Empowerment Network
! Two years ago, I biked 100 miles to Shiner, Texas and raised over $3k for GIRLS. This year I wanted to do something similar by challenging myself while seeing more of Texas and giving back to my favorite organization.
This is how it all works!
1) You can join me during the walk. I'll be heading out from Travis County Exposition Center at 6:30 a.m. I'll be sharing a link where you can track my progress, in case you want to pick up part of the walk later. ALSO, Taylor's very own Texas Beer Company said that they will provide FREE BEER to me or anyone else who reaches the finish line! I'm guessing the walk will take about 9 hours-- so I'm going to play a happy hour from 5-7 p.m. at Texas Beer Company. Join me!
2) You can make a donation! Every bit counts. Just donate here before March 21. Is Venmo easier? Send over your donation to @Clarisa-Ramirez-1 and I'll write a check to GIRLS. (That said, go through the link so GIRLS can contact you about your receipt and send you a nice thank you, etc!)
Dustin and I scoped out the route, and it actually makes more sense to start from Manor, although the walk will be closer to 20 miles. This is what the walk will look like (below). The terrain is mostly flat, but there is a bit of an incline on the way to Taylor. Surprisingly, on busier roads there are more sidewalks than I expected and the country road (973) between Manor and Taylor has wide shoulders bordering grass, which is great!
Dustin will be meeting along the way at a few strategic stops with water, PBJ sandwiches and snacks + bananas, sunscreen, a medical kit, gatorade, a thin blanket for discretionary needs-- but I will carry water, chargers, some supplies. Feel free to message me if you have questions-- and please do let me know if you'd like to join!
(Having hiked Mt. Chirripo in Costa Rica with a huge pack! for 8 continuous hours, I can say that you if you plan to join, you should know that you will need to have trained, be fueling with snacks along the way, wear firm sneakers, and need to keep your muscles warm by continuously walking.)
I will be giving updates via social media on Facebook and Instagram, but the times below are approximates.
Day Of Schedule7:00 a.m. - meet and park in downtown Manor, specifically in front of Ramos Restaurant & Sports Bar on 116 E Parsons street.
